About the Artist

As both an architect and designer, Johanna Grawunder fuses practical and creative sensibilities to create stunning installations. Her practice encompasses architecture and interiors, limited edition furniture design and mass-produced pieces. Raised in the setting of Southern Californian iridescent light, Grawunder specializes in making hybrid pieces that would be luminous and simultaneously functional and decorative. With the intention of mixing furniture and light up, so people feel a bit freer, Johanna has developed an alternative aesthetic to the design landscape. Her aim is to create work that exudes quality and has a sense of longevity amid the age of consumer culture. To this end, she employs thoughtful and skilled craftsmanship methods where technology plays a crucial role. Both the aesthetic and the functionality of her work encourage this ethos. Among the companies who have commissioned her products are Flos, Boffi, B&B, and Salviati. Grawunder’s light installations occupied the roof of the Museum of Arts and Design (New York) in 2011.
