EXHIBITION STATEMENT
Carpenters Workshop Gallery New York brings in the New Year with a diverse group show, Selection of Important Works, opening on January 3rd 2023.
Bronze artworks lead the exhibition, including Vincenzo de Cotiis’ DC1606B light sculpture, into which the artist has infused elements of torsion influenced by the Italian Baroque. Virgil Abloh’s sinking Alaska Chair, and a sculpture from Kendell Geers’ latest exhibition, Flesh of the Spirit, are also included.
Ingrid Donat presents Hommage à Groult, her response to André Groult’s 1925 Chiffonnier Anthropomorph, a cabinet in the shape of a stylised female body. Donat modernises Groult’s original wooden design, imbuing her bronze with characteristic strength and delicacy. Donat’s dialogue with the past is continued through the positioning of her contemporary sculpture alongside the works of modernist masters Vladimir Kagan and Gio Ponti.
Two minimalist artworks exemplary of Rick Owens’ singular tastes are shown, highlighting his unusual choice of materials. Prong is a solid abstraction of foam covered in camel skin, accompanied by the Half Box seat rendered in a rare alabaster stone. A selection of Roger Herman’s ceramic artworks and two characterful stone pieces from Aldo Bakker are displayed alongside Atelier van Lieshout’s Ballerina Lamp and Sausage with Funnel Lamp. Both pieces mark Van Lieshout’s irreverent approach to sculpture, and his continued material exploration of the human body.
