Carpenters Workshop Gallery is delighted to announce that artist Aldo Bakker is curating the exhibition Tangerine at TEFAF New York 2022, which will focus on contemporary Dutch artistic production.
Bakker leads the exhibition with several new works, including the debut presentation of Ring Table. He has also selected complementary pieces from leading Dutch artists Maarten Baas, and Atelier van Lieshout, as well as light-sculptures from DRIFT and Nacho Carbonell. Adorning the walls are artworks from artists held in high esteem by Bakker, including Toon Verhoef, Tim Enthoven, Mathieu Meijers, and a large expressionist canvas by Robert Zandvliet which was selected by the artist as response to Bakker’s own works.
The title Tangerine recalls the Netherland’s symbolic orange colour, uniting the many facets of Dutch creativity under one flag with understated subtlety.
Tangerine showcases a breadth of Dutch: comprising elements of ironic, playful, reserved, but also carefulness. Bakker focusses on the synergy between these elements. The works fit together instinctively, but they also find a connection in other areas. The drawing of a material versus the assembling of parts. Dissecting a landscape that returns in loose forms. Fluidity. The dualism of the attraction of a work on the one hand and its abrasiveness at the same time.
Central to Bakker’s artistic philosophy is that each of his artworks manifest itself independently, providing answers to its own questions. Fascinated with form, he is inspired by all kinds of expressions, perhaps most of all by his everyday surroundings. Simply because they present themselves daily. Form imposes itself, can it be transformed into something meaningful, beautiful? Is it important to change your surroundings, or is that just a distraction?
Ring Table is a work that can vary in size and material, but is identical in form. The simple design of four complementary elements interlocked around a central void can be scaled indefinitely, and its form is such that each edition exists independently of any other. The four editions in Tangerine include a gold ring, an urushi lacquer bracelet, a cherry wood side table, and a Salome marble console table.
Other new editions include Rest console, rendered in a new marble; Giallo Vaticano, Console Table in Breccia di Venere and Sitting Table (Stack) which comprises three objects decreasing in size stacked on top of one another. All three are carved from the same block of pink Portuguese marble, and when stacked, their matching stone veins align.
