EXHIBITION STATEMENT
Carpenters Workshop Gallery’s presentation at Design Miami 2022 focusses on the conjunction of material and process. Contemporary artworks of concrete, resin, metal, ceramic, and stone are exhibited, as the gallery’s artists continue to push each material beyond its conventional limitations.
Martin Laforêt’s Variations collection leads the exhibition, demonstrating his recent technical achievements in casting, colouring and hand-shaping concrete. The French artist’s series is experimental, exploring textural references to both the Arte Povera movement and Brutalist architecture through subtle alterations to his chosen material.
Equally innovative, Niko Koronis’s SUKU series taps into a rich vein of art history investigating the mechanics of vision and optical effects. Shown at Design Miami in their inaugural presentation, the multi-layered artworks are the result of Koronis’ pioneering craftsmanship working with resin, illustrating the interdependencies of light and colour.
Rick Owens develops his production of striking, minimalist artworks, updating their archetypal forms with new, uncompromising materials. He includes his latest Curial seat rendered solely in clean lines of aluminium, as well as two angular Half-Box seats, one in plywood and the other in alabaster.
Also exhibited are two consoles by Aldo Bakker, bronze artworks by Ingrid Donat, Roger Herman’s ceramics, sculptural stone works from Mathieu Lehanneur’s Ocean Memories and Vincenzo de Cotiis’ Crossing Over collections, and a light sculpture by Johanna Grawunder.
