EXHIBITION STATEMENT
Carpenters Workshop Gallery returns to PAD Paris to present the finest in contemporary and historical functional art. The selection highlights the intersection between art, design and craftsmanship, featuring works by Maarten Baas, Vincenzo De Cotiis, Anton Hendrik Denys, Roger Herman, Ingrid Donat, Léa Mestres, DRIFT, Giacomo Ravagli, Martin Laforêt, Aki+Arnaud Cooren, Joaquim Tenreiro, Wonmin Park, and José Zanine Caldas
Vincenzo De Cotiis’ interest in the Purism movement produces works with simple but distinctive forms stripped of detail, as in DC2402 Mirror. This work disregards the superfluity of ornamentation, seeking instead the true internal beauty of the object. The material honesty of the piece embraces the natural properties of cast brass and German silver, creating a reflective and functional sculpture.
Martin Laforêt’s new sculpture Study 1 Yellow forms part of the artist’s latest explorations of shape, scale and colour, evoking the architecture of urban spaces that can be both desolate and expansive. Made of lacquered wood, this dining table reflects Laforêt’s interest in conferring new life and sensibility into the ubiquitous imagery, materials and forms found in artificial contemporary landscapes.
Reflecting some of the most forward-looking practices in collectible design and functional art, this presentation bridges the gap between form and function. Through striking aesthetics, innovative use of materials and thought-provoking themes, the exhibited artists unlock the cultural and conceptual narratives found within objects.
