Castro NYC is a jewellery brand founded in 2006 by the late Terry Castro, a luminary whose artistic oeuvre has left an indelible mark on the landscape of contemporary jewellery design, weaving an evocative narrative from themes of urbanity, innovation and cultural identity.
Born in 1972 in Toledo, Ohio, Terry Castro’s mother exposed him to travel, fashion and culture at an early age, sparking a creativity that led him to produce his first jewellery works from rusted, junk components that he found in a local scrapyard. Castro then spent a lifetime interrogating the world around him and translating his experiences into highly personal jewellery designs, handcrafting intense, sculptural, artworks that conveyed the strength of his character.
Embracing the darker aspects of life, Castro’s work features ornate gothic details intertwined with brutal, destroyed elements, and explores the relationships between death, masks, animals, and humans. His refusal to follow trends and his obsessive attention to detail and strict standards of excellence elevated his designs to the highest levels, earning him praise for his craftsmanship and unique approach to meticulously handcrafted jewellery.
Terry Castro started working with Carpenters Workshop Gallery in 2022. Since his passing later that year, Castro NYC has been under the stewardship of his child, Sir King Castro, an artist whose work is a conversation between traumas, philosophical musings and a rich inner imaginative world.
Sir King Castro uses a mixture of mediums to produce compositions that mirror raw and visceral feelings. Drawing from their mixed Mexican and West African heritage, they blend traditional motifs from each culture, crafting abstract and symbolic representations of their lineage and process of healing from the trauma of generational curses, loss of their father and the experience of growing up as part of a religious cult.
This change in Castro NYC’s leadership marks a new chapter that promises an exciting future for the brand, bringing forth a fusion of the Terry’s unmatched creative legacy and Sir King’s fresh perspective. Craftsmanship meets innovation in the new collections we see today, which not only celebrate Castro’s ground-breaking contributions but also heralds a new chapter in his storied narrative.
Pieces like Terry Berry Brooch, Bunny Doll Brooch, and Flying Monkey Pendant were initially conceived by Terry but have recently been completed by Sir King in collaboration with Carpenters Workshop Jewellery, helping the founder’s artistic vision to reach its full fruition.
