Alvar Aalto Vase (Set of 3), White Savoy

£1,331

Edition Vintage

1937

Glass

A set of three white ”Savoy” vases in different heights designed by Alvar Aalto for Iittala. The first series of these pieces was made to be shown in the Finnish section at the Paris World Exhibition in 1937. This model is a cult piece of Finnish design that was specifically created for the Savoy restaurant in Helsinki, which opened in 1937, and was inspired by the silhouette of traditional Sámi female dress.

Artist

Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto (1898 - 1976) was an architect and interior designer from Finland. Aalto’s early work was influenced by Nordic Classicism, as evidenced by his first public structure, the Jyväskylä Workers' Club. His humanist architecture, displayed at the Finnish pavilion of the 1939 World Fair in New York, placed him at the forefront of the modernist architectural scene. He contributed significantly to furniture design, with his stools notably used in Apple stores worldwide.
