Franz West (1947-2012) was an Austrian artist, whose work involved abstract sculpture, furniture and collage. He studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna from 1977 to 1982, imbuing his work with a practical vigour. His work has been surveyed the world over, including at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, Philadelphia Museum of Art, LACMA, Fondation Beyeler, Basel. He was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011.
