Hugo França is a Brazilian designer who initially trained as an industrial engineer and later switched to furniture making. He acquired a deep knowledge of traditional woodworking methods having spent fifteen years with local populations in the Brazilian forest. In his modern designs, Franca solely uses recovered native, solid Brazilian wood. He explores and develops different materials and woodworking methods to turn waste wood into functional pieces. As a result, all his creations are sustainable and present innovative design solutions. Cadeira Zola is made of pequi wood, with a tall backrest carved from the hollow trunk, creating a void of negative space. In this hand-crafted chair, Franca preserves the original pattern of the pequi tree.
