Marc Newson

Marc Newson was born in 1963 in Sydney. He has been living and working in Tokyo, Paris and London where he is now based. He studied jewellery and sculpture at Sydney College of the Arts where he experimented with furniture design. After graduation, he was awarded a grant from the Australian Crafts Council with which he launched his first exhibition, featuring the ‘Lockheed Lounge’, a piece that has now, twenty years later, set three consecutive world records at auction.

A MULTI-FIELD INFLUENT

Known as one of the most influential designers of his generation, he now works in a wide range of disciplines within design such as aircraft, product, furniture, jewellery and clothing design. He creates everythin, from furniture and household objects to bicycles and cars, private and commercial aircrafts and yachts for clients across the globe.

BECOMING AN ICON

Many of his designs have been a runaway success for his clients and have achieved the status of modern design icons.

‘The point is with my design, with what I do, whether it’s design or whether it’s Art, because I do everything from designing airplane interiors, which is like on one level really pure engineering (ok there is a bit of design there, but it’s mostly engineering). On the other end of the spectrum, I’m designing sculptures, things like the lockheed lounge, there’s a whole lot of limited edition pieces that I designed that are being sold at auctions, and things like that…now that’s my fantasy, that’s my pure… emotion just running wild.’

His work is presented in many major museum collections, including the MoMA in New York, London’s Design Museum and V&A, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Vitra Design Museum.

Marc Newson was included in Time magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People in the World’ and has received numerous awards and distinctions. He was appointed The Royal Designer for Industry in the UK, received an honorary doctorate from Sydney University, holds Adjunct Professorships at Sydney College of the Arts and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and most recently was created CBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
