In Mason’s visual language, symbiosis can be either mutualistic or parasitic. Granite, slate and ironstone rock imbue the darkly patinated body of this imposing piece with their own inimitable resonance, whilst the porcelain at its upper reaches is twisted and fractured by its own coarse inclusions. Host represents the unique energy of the materials it comprises, illustrating how Mason uses them to enhance the emotional depth of the artwork.

Artist

Gareth Mason

Gareth Mason is a British artist who, over his four-decade career, has consistently resisted the temptations of ceramic art’s conventions – particularly those surrounding the perceived purity of porcelain. Entangling irreverence and material risk with respect for ceramics history, Mason’s pots carry tensions and incompatibilities that defy straightforward resolution.
