During a visit to Nepal to make tapestries the Brothers learned of the “Sadhu”. A Hindu holy man that dedicates their life to the contemplation of God. Oftentimes sadhu will rid themselves of comfort in order to create a closer relationship with the divine. While being driven by the owner of the rug factory the Brothers saw a sadhu standing on one foot on the side of the road. Hours later they spotted the man again, asleep, standing on one foot. “Why is that man standing on one foot?” “Because the sadhu has decided to stand forever, and, given up the pleasure of using that foot so that he may be closer to god” was the reply. Despite the reality or the feasibility of the situation, the power of that ritual was inspiring. This stool was built at Anderson Ranch in Aspen Colorado during the Brother's 2016 residency. The use of the Sam Maloof wood barn inspired the brothers to re engage in woodcarving.. A craft taught to them at the early age of twelve by their father. Naturally, when building a series of one footed stools in the high altitude of Colorado, the Sadhu came to mind. It was an appropriate homage to the spirit of contemplation, whether engaged by spirituality or material craft.

Haas Brothers
Twins Nikolai and Simon Haas (b.1984) create irreverent sculptures that explore themes related to nature, fantasy, and sexuality. Their biomorphic works defy categorisation, most often occupying the interstitial space between fine art and functional objects.
