South African artist Kendell Geers uses figures from art history, religious icons, other emblematic cultural images to explore themes of desire, violence, morality and sociopolitical ideology. Flesh of the Spirit 19 is part of a series of works interpreting idols and masks from Indigenous cultures. Reworking these fetishised objects into bronze sculpture, the artist questions how South African identities have been constructed through Apartheid and the post-Apartheid period.
