A person’s gaze is influenced by the habits of their learning. Mirrors and masks dictate and distort this gaze. Traditional African masks have been used for the wearer to become a healers, gods, or clowns. Geers uses masks as a modern interrogation of identity, freedom, protection and display. The artist 3D scans African masks and works directly into them with his hands, shifting their identities away from clearly defined roles and using them as territories of conflicting expression.
