In 1981, Roger Herman moved from Germany to Los Angeles and began painting with the loose approach of German expressionism, almost single-handedly giving rise to the Neo-Expressionist movement on the US west coast.

In the early 2000s he applied the same sense of regeneration to his ceramic artworks. Far more concerned with form than function, his bowls, plates and vases resonate with both the energy of Herman’s originality as well as the depth of his creative experience.
