Roger Herman was introduced to pottery throwing by one of his students at UCLA. He found a sense of regeneration in his ceramic artworks. Far more concerned with form than function, his bowls, plates, and vases resonate with the energy of Herman’s originality and the depth of his creative experience.
Herman has stated that he never focuses on subject matter or narrative in his painting. His only subject is painting itself, hence the repetition in his work. Likening himself to Italian painter Giorgio Morandi, Herman continues to draw novelty out of familiar subjects such as skulls, faces, and nude figures.
