“Tiss-Tiss is a fusion of extremes. Metal and fabric, East and West, radical and traditional, each aspect is revaluated through its juxtaposition with the other. Our relationship with the world is mutually defining, but Tiss-Tiss taps into a shared collective consciousness, combining human and natural forces into one.”

AKI+ARNAUD COOREN | TISS-TISS FAUTEUIL

Armchair | Patinated aluminium

In their minimalist Tiss-Tiss series, the Japanese-French design duo Aki+Arnaud Cooren imbue metal with the fragile poetry of fabric.

Fauteuil (2017) is a low chair, constructed from aluminium components sand-cast in a relief of linen fabric, with the loose weave of individual threads held in uncharacteristically rigid formations. Fauteuil was the work from which the technical and conceptual form of Tiss-Tiss originated, and which won the Liliane Bettencourt prize in 2017. Its metal is tinted black, a modern take on traditional Japanese textile dying, and each sheet is edged with sewn stitch imprints, furthering the illusion this cabinet is made of fabric, not metal.

AKI+ARNAUD COOREN | Ishigaki Lamps

Table Lamps | Linen, carbon, resin, steel, bamboo, pigment, light fittings

The Tiss-Tiss series, created by Japanese-French design duo Aki+Arnaud, uses a minimalist aesthetic to succinctly explore the conceptual relationship between man, material and nature.

Ishigaki Lamp #1, #2 and #3 stand apart from the Tiss-Tiss series visually but continue its material and conceptual themes, combining the harshness of metal with the fragile poetry of fabric. In this instance, the metal and fabric elements are both included in the composition separately, rather than unified into the trompe-l’oeil effect of the aluminium Tiss-Tiss furniture. A metal and epoxy-carbon base supports a bamboo stem and a fixed linen lampshade, dyed in subtle shades of blue.
