Exhibition Statement

The Brazil-based Campana Brothers are known for their curiosity for mundane, everyday materials and their unique way of representing the world. Sculpted from reused fabric, rubber and metal, Sushi Cabinet Steel reflects the studio’s investigations into upholstery and experimentations with discarded cloth and carpet. Swirling circular patterns in vivid shades of green and blue are found in the fabric panels of this work.

Spanish artist Nacho Carbonell views objects as living organisms whose design and materiality come to life in the viewer's imagination. His Table Cocoon 6 is a sculptural lamp positioned on a table structure and swathed in metal mesh and plaster. Pigmented in a shade of brown, the monochromatic sculpture typifies Carbonell’s tactile approach to sculpture and his interest in texture and experimental techniques.

Revered as the founding father of the American art furniture movement, Wendell Castle was a pivotal figure in redefining the boundaries between art and design in the late 20th century. Veiled in a Dream, features three tapering, conical spires providing the framework for the seat suspended from their side. First carved from wood and then cast in bronze, the work’s aerodynamic form appears to defy the logic of its material.

Milan-based Vincenzo De Cotiis is known for evocative works that embody a vision of design as poetic and non-replicable. The composition of his DC1612B Wall Mirror is fractured, like the cut of a precious gem. With asymmetrical composition of silver and glass-mirror elements, the work reflects De Cotiis’ eternal quest to capture light in form, using reflective materials to create luminous narratives throughout his work.

The display also features artists and designers including Maarten Baas, DRIFT, Roger Herman, Studio Job, Atelier Van Lieshout, Gareth Mason, Wonmin Park and Marcin Rusak. Together, the works exemplify Carpenters Workshop Gallery’s contribution to the South Asian art market through representing some of the most striking innovations being made in the world of collectible contemporary design. With its continued presence in India, the gallery aims to strengthen ties between the region's vibrant cultural landscape and creativity from Europe and other parts of the world.
