Sylvie Auvray’s rings are imbued with texture and colour, created by the effects of humidity produced by the enamels, metallic oxides and glass powder during the firing process. Precious stones and minerals, procured from the renowned mineral and meteorite boutique Carion, depict faces in the place of eyes, noses and mouths.
Auvray’s work is reminiscent of the eccentricity of the contemporary ‘sloppy craft’ style and the ‘fat lava’ style of the 1950s and recalls the works of ceramicists Raoul Dufy and Josep Llorens Artigas. The rich texture is also evocative of the French Renaissance ceramicist Bernard Palissy, whose depictions of flora and fauna are enchanting and ominous.
