EXHIBITION STATEMENT
Material Alchemy: Part II is the second and final installment of the collaborative group exhibition co-curated by Carpenters Workshop Gallery and Marianne Boesky Gallery.
Material Alchemy: Part II explores the radical effect the Italian Arte Povera movement on art and design, exhibiting artworks that reject material hierarchies, demonstrate a formal honesty, and generate a new hybrid natural-industrial language.
Leading the show are new works from Italian artist, Vincenzo de Cotiis’ “Crossing Over” series, combining recycled fiberglass, reclaimed wood, and stromatolite- a pre-historic fossilized rock. Non-pristine and imperfect surfaces characterize Vincenzo de Cotiis’ practice revealing the materials’ individual histories and elevating them beyond their function.
The exhibition brings together artists who are inspired by the core tenets of the 1960s movement and elevate humble materials and forms in their work. Each artist generates an immediate connection between viewer and object through uses of materials in various states of process, bridging a gap between the found and the made, and emphasizing the transformative qualities of each artwork.
