Maarten Baas CLAY BOOKSHELVES

These vibrant Bookshelves are from Maarten Baas’s iconic ‘Clay’ collection launched in 2006. The idiosyncratic childishness of this collection is created through Baas’s individual hand modelling of industrial clay around each metal skeleton. The vibrant colours, texture and irregularity of form unique to each piece give the bookshelves their naïve and spontaneous finish, with their elongated forms given a bulging like effect through the rough finish of the clay to add a humorous feel to the piece. Pieces from the Clay collection are present in museum collections such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris.
