Industrial clay, Metal Skeleton and Leather Upholstery

These vibrant Rocking Chairs are from Maarten Baas’s iconic ‘Clay’ collection launched in 2006. The idiosyncratic childishness of this collection is created through Baas’s individual hand modelling of industrial clay around each metal skeleton. This technique gives way for the artists process to lay bare on the finished work, adding a sense of intimacy and originality through the visible handling to the finished object. The vibrant colours, texture and irregularity of form unique to each piece give the Rocking Chairs a naïve and spontaneous finish. Pieces from the Clay collection are present in museum collections such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris.
