Nero Marquina Marble
This piece is part of Architectures, a collection of functional art designed by the renowned fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. This ashtray shows a repetition of carved forms throughout. Diminishing rectangular forms have been carved to form the base of the ashtray holding repetitive spherical tubes within which not only add to the serenity of the objects form but further aid its function.
Lagerfeld was inspired by antiquity, combining the precision of canonical proportions, the golden ratio and materials associated with antiquity to create this series. Each piece is carved form a carefully selected marble block such as this functional ashtray carved from either black Nero Marquina marble, curated for its brush stroke-like, milky white veins or the Arabescato Fantastico marble, a rare vibrant white stone with dark grey veins which had not been quarried for over thirty years.
