Bone China Porcelain

This work, entitled ‘Pastis’, is Aldo Bakker’s porcelain re-imagination of the traditional drink’s pourer, produced in a limited edition of 25. The flawless singularity of the shape creates a fluidity to its form, a possibe reflection of the liquid held within. The seamless interaction of handle to body creates a simultaneous unity of functionality to form, of user to object.

By positioning his works as individual characters, Aldo Bakker forces his audience to shift its perception. We are no longer looking at an inanimate object on which we project our knowledge of style, shape or material value. Instead, these creatures invite us to engage in a conversation about their behaviour, their uncertainties, their beliefs, their native tongue. We do not approach them as buyers or even as art historians, we become their fellow travellers, questioning ourselves as much as they question us.

Artist

Aldo Bakker

Aldo Bakker, born in the Netherlands in 1971, is a designer whose objects challenge the way we perceive and interact with the material world. Known for his bowls, pitchers, stools, spoons, and tables, Bakker creates works that blur the boundary between utility and autonomy. His practice is defined by an exquisite command of form, colour, and material, combined with an almost unsettling insistence that objects are not passive commodities but independent presences with their own integrity and character.
