Ingrid Donat’s Banc Bibliotheque Femmes aux Colliers is an example of the Caryatides motif that Donat developed in her early sculptural work. The legs of the bench are shaped into female figures, supporting the bench on their heads. Caryatides such as these can be seen in classical architecture such as the Erechtheion, on the Acropolis in Athens, with its columns replaced by sculpted women. Considering the architectural role of these figures gave Donat an early avenue into functional sculpture.
