Environmental Responsibility Statement

The climate crisis demands action from every sector. As a gallery dedicated to functional art and design - objects created to endure across generations - we have a particular responsibility to consider the longevity not only of the works we represent, but of the world in which they will exist.

Carpenters Workshop Gallery operates four galleries in Paris, London, New York and Los Angeles, alongside an 8,000 m² production facility in Mitry-Mory, France. Our activities - commissioning and producing works of exceptional craftsmanship, transporting artworks internationally, and staging exhibitions worldwide - carry environmental consequences that we are committed to measuring, understanding, and systematically reducing.

We recognise that the art world, particularly organisations operating at an international scale, contributes disproportionately to global emissions through travel, shipping, and energy use. Our 2024 carbon footprint assessment confirmed this: total emissions of 3,442 tCO₂eq, with 91% falling within Scope 3. Purchased goods, business travel, and freight transport are our primary sources. This data now forms the foundation of our environmental strategy.

Our Commitments

  • Reduce Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 30% by 2030, through renewable energy and efficiency improvements
  • Transition to 100% renewable electricity across all sites by 2030
  • Address Scope 3 emissions through modal shift in freight, business travel reduction, supplier engagement, and sustainable sourcing
  • Shift all non-urgent international freight from air to sea (as of Q1 2026, 100% of international gallery-to-gallery shipments have shifted to sea)
  • Reach 60%+ recycled or certified materials in production by 2028
  • Achieve zero waste to landfill at our production facility by 2028
  • Reduce business travel emissions by 30% by 2030

Actions We Are Taking

  • Calculating and reporting our carbon footprint annually
  • Offering sea freight as standard on all client shipment quotations
  • Implementing carbon budgets for business travel
  • Transitioning to green energy contracts, beginning with our Paris and Mitry-Mory sites in 2026
  • Requiring FSC certification for all virgin wood used in production and engaging our full supplier network
  • Maintaining a Green Team that convenes regularly to track progress and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Working with suppliers to understand and reduce emissions across our value chain

Collaboration & Transparency

We are a member of the Gallery Climate Coalition and support the sector's collective goal of reducing carbon emissions by at least 50% by 2030. Our Environmental Management Plan sets a 30% reduction target for direct emissions by 2030, with ongoing work to reduce the Scope 3 emissions that make up the majority of our footprint. As our measurement and supplier engagement mature, we will revisit and refine these targets. We believe in setting goals we can credibly deliver, and in being transparent when there is more work to do.

Lasting change requires collaboration - with our artists, collectors, suppliers, and peers across the industry. We have set these targets in the knowledge that we are at the beginning of this journey. We do not have all the answers, and there is much work ahead. We welcome dialogue with our stakeholders and are committed to reporting transparently on our progress.
