This hard cover edition celebrates Atelier Van Lieshout’s urban project Slave City. In development since 2005, Slave City was designed to maximize rationality, efficiency and profit above all else. Exploring the space between utopia and dystopia, Slave City aimed to be the first ‘zero energy ‘city of its size, with the heart of the city being based on the artist’s calculating that 200,000 slaves could work in a call centre for seven hours a day to net an annual profit of €7.8 billion. This book illustrates the intricacy involved in the artistic workings of such a space.
