Wendell Castle was among the first in the U.S. to merge the disciplines of sculpture and design, and he is credited with pioneering the American crafts movement.

The stained walnut seat, Like an Echo, displays the voluminous curves that came to define Castle’s later work. The artist invented his own techniques to radically alter the direction of mid-century design, such as lamination, involving carving into stacked layers of wood, through which he was able to explore a greater range of forms. The artist’s deep understanding of craftsmanship, combined with his visionary eye for form, led him to create elegant, beguiling artworks.
