Exhibition Statement

The remarkable Pod of Drawers by Marc Newson features a sophisticated, aerodynamic form achieved through the meticulous application of riveted aluminium over a fluid fibreglass shell. Visionary design merges with high craftsmanship to create the piece’s glossy, futuristic appeal. The original 1987 prototype has resin feet with traces of white paint, while five integrated drawers are crafted to maintain the work’s smooth, uninterrupted surface, demonstrating Newson's blend of artistry and functionality.

Other exhibited artists and designers include Marcin Rusak, Maarten Baas, Zanine Caldas, Aki+Arnaud Cooren, Vincenzo De Cotiis, Ingrid Donat, Vincent Dubourg, Atelier Van Lieshout and Giacomo Ravagli. Curated specially for TEFAF New York 2026, the display reflects Carpenters Workshop Gallery’s commitment to collectible design as a transformative force within the contemporary art market.

Vincenzo De Cotiis

A pioneer of contemporary collectible design, Vincenzo De Cotiis is known for merging art, architecture and design into a singular, sculptural language. Through manifestations that conflate archaic idioms with futuristic expressions, his evocative works embody a vision of design as poetic and non-replicable.

Marc Newson

Marc Newson was born in 1963 in Sydney and has lived and worked in Tokyo, Paris, and London, where he is now based. He studied jewellery and sculpture at Sydney College of the Arts, where he first began experimenting with furniture design. After graduating, he was awarded a grant from the Australian Crafts Council, which enabled him to stage his first exhibition featuring the Lockheed Lounge – a piece that, twenty years later, went on to set three consecutive world records at auction.

Ingrid Donat

Ingrid Donat is one of the most influential living artists working in decorative arts. As a contemporary designer and sculptor whose artistic identity has been shaped by her rich cultural heritage, Donat channels an inner creative force that allows her to reinvent the timeless elegance of French decorative arts traditions. Known for imbuing bronze with warmth and vitality, the artist integrates sculptural practices into the production of functional pieces.
