Exhibition Statement

The remarkable Pod of Drawers by Marc Newson features a sophisticated, aerodynamic form achieved through the meticulous application of riveted aluminium over a fluid fibreglass shell. Visionary design merges with high craftsmanship to create the piece’s glossy, futuristic appeal. The original 1987 prototype has resin feet with traces of white paint, while five integrated drawers are crafted to maintain the work’s smooth, uninterrupted surface, demonstrating Newson's blend of artistry and functionality.

Pedalò Rust illustrates Rick Owens’ recent work with rusted steel. Working with this material for the first time, the artist was intrigued by its roughness and brutalism, which he wanted to elevate to a luxurious aesthetic. Through rusting – and thus gaining character and authenticity as it matures – this meticulously crafted seating sculpture celebrates the effects of time and environment on metal. For Owens, such transformations enhance the connection between a design, its context and its user.

Spanish artist Nacho Carbonell is known for his tactile, experimental approach to sculpture, which transforms objects into expressive, living forms. The suspended lighting sculpture Chandelier Colorfull features cocoon-like shapes forged out of honeycomb metal mesh filled with Paverpol plaster. These forms reflect Carbonell’s fascination with the shapes and textures of the natural world, making the piece appear both alive and fossilised, while a warm illumination glows from within the artwork.

Other exhibited artists and designers include Marcin Rusak, Maarten Baas, Zanine Caldas, Campana Brothers, Aki+Arnaud Cooren, Vincenzo De Cotiis, Ingrid Donat, Vincent Dubourg, Atelier Van Lieshout and Giacomo Ravagli. Curated specially for TEFAF New York 2026, the display reflects Carpenters Workshop Gallery’s commitment to collectible design as a transformative force within the contemporary art market.
