Ane Christensen

Ane Christensen is an artist working in metal with a practice spanning over 25 years. The theme of presence and absence of light runs through every piece she makes, with urban landscapes, optical illusions and negative space as parallel, recurring inspirations.

Artist Biography

Christensen grew up in Copenhagen but has lived in London since 1993. She studied a Higher National Diploma in Jewellery Design at Sir John Cass Faculty of Art and went on to work as an assistant for two silversmiths. She then completed her Masters in Metalwork and Silversmithing at the Royal College of Art, before establishing her own practice in 1999.

All of Christensen’s work begins with the simple geometry of cylinders, bowl forms and flat sheets, which she deconstructs using techniques such as piercing, soldering and hand-forming. She often works with metal rods and wire, using them like three-dimensional line drawings to frame space and disrupt the density of her material. Exploring the boundaries between functionality and sculptural form, she works with metals such as sterling silver, 18 karat gold, stainless steel, mild steel, aluminium, copper and brass, addressing a range of different subjects and scales.

Most of the designer’s metalwork is the result of applying a strict set of rules. She finds inspiration in the restrictive work process itself and the challenge to stretch its limitations. Her Negative and Ghost series, however, are a move towards a freer, more abstract expression. Christensen draws inspiration from both urban landscapes and line drawings, while the culture and light of Scandinavia continue to have a profound influence on her practice.

Christensen’s work has been exhibited by Saatchi Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, Contemporary Applied Arts, The Scottish Gallery and others. Her work is also held in several major museum collections including Victoria and Albert Museum, Crafts Council, Koldinghus, Liverpool Museum, Designmuseum Danmark and The Goldsmiths’ Company. The designer has been recognised with awards from The Goldsmiths’ Company and Copenhagen Guild of Goldsmiths.
