Exhibition Statement

Ingrid Donat, one of the most influential sculptors working in decorative arts, shows her new Lampe Orm set for the first time. Offered as a pair, the two standing lamps crafted from bronze feature intricate snakeskin-inspired patterns engraved into their surfaces, reflecting the artist’s ability for imbuing bronze with warmth and vitality through her signature mark-making techniques. The two lamps are conceived as male and female counterparts are crafted into forms that embody how Donat integrates sculptural practices into the production of functional pieces.

Also on display are tables and seating pieces from Donat’s recent Lilia outdoor collection, whose pronounced vegetal elements recall the ornamental vocabulary of Art Nouveau and the Art 1900 movement. The bronze table and the aluminium frames of the armchairs and ottomans are structured around the Lam motif from Islamic architecture – a pattern evoking growth and vitality – while the ligatured fabrics of the seating pieces’ upholstery echo the material intelligence of traditional African textiles. As with many of Donat’s most personal works, the pieces were initially conceived for her own home, reflecting the intimate and autobiographical dimension that runs through her practice.

The booth also features ocean-inspired lighting pieces by Aki+Arnaud Cooren, an abstract mirror framed with cast white bronze by Vincenzo de Cotiis, vividly painted ceramic vessels and plates by Roger Herman and a sculptural bronze table by Charles Trevelyan.

A jewellery display sees exquisite materials and sculptural artistry converging to produce cutting-edge works of wearable art that respond to the aesthetic languages of the human body. Polished bronze earrings by Jane Schmitt and a yellow gold and wood bracelet by Alessandro Pawler sit alongside gold rings by Ane Christiensen and Kayo Saito, while Hunrod Stacking Ring Set by Michele Lamy and Loree Rodkin breaks stereotypes of feminine jewellery by creating a collection of ‘finger armour’. Pieces by Sylvie Auvray, Hermien Cassiers, Alice Cicolini, Robert Longo, Stefano Marchetti and several others are also exhibited.

As a long-standing participant in PAD London and PAD Paris, Carpenters Workshop Gallery is pleased to now join PAD – the world’s first collectible design fair – in southern France for the next step in its journey. Through its specialism in the intersection between art, design, architecture and craftsmanship, the gallery contributes to the fair’s position as a privileged meeting place for collectors, institutions and discerning enthusiasts.
