South Korean artist Wonmin Park originally transitioned from practising architecture to contemporary art, and that precision has carried over into his artworks. His metal series Plain Cuts is built from an exacting assembly of thin aluminium sheets, inspired and adapted from Henri Matisse’s cut outs and Carl Andre’s Steel Zinc Plain.
His work is minimalist, each piece a succinct artistic statement. Wonmin’s guiding principle is that his work speaks for itself, and as he describes “takes its distance from me as its creator”. He envisions a distinction between the artist and the art, to give each work autonomy.
